A compassionate home euthanasia service for your pet

About us

PJE pet farewell is an independent dedicated home euthanasia service for cats and dogs centred on Chelmsford started in 2019 and it is provided by qualified veterinary surgeon, Paul J Eagar BVetMed MRCVS.

We make the compassionate decision to put pets to sleep when they are no longer able to live their lives as they would wish and because we love them enough to let them go. PJE pet farewell provides owners with the opportunity of allowing their pets to die peacefully and with dignity in the surroundings where they are happiest, in their own home.

Paul J Eagar has been working as a vet in Chelmsford since 1985. In 2014 he started PJE Home Vet a mobile veterinary service for Chelmsford and surrounding areas but now after 10 years that service is being downsized, giving more time to PJE pet farewell.

PJE pet farewell and HOW TO CONTACT US

We would like to point out that PJE pet farewell is not an emergency service however owners having made that difficult decision to put their loved one to sleep would like it done sooner or later so if contacted by 9am we would endeavour to provide the service that day 7-days a week. After 6pm weekdays and before 1pm Saturdays, Sundays & Bank Holidays there is an out of hours charge (See price guide below). To contact PJE pet farewell please phone 07562 419925 and the phone is answered from 7.30am.

COVID-19

PJE pet farewell continued to provide a service throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. It firmly believes that home euthanasia is important for the welfare of the animal and helps to alleviate owner’s natural feelings of loss and grief which follow this process.
It is committed to following government guidelines to keep everyone safe and will discuss its
practices with you when you book the appointment. Paul Eagar had the COVID booster & flu booster in October 2023.

How we work

If you require any further information or advice, please telephone 07562 419925 to speak to Paul Eagar.

  • Before we visit

Once you have made this difficult decision please contact us by telephone, please do not text or email. This call will help us to take your details, listen to what you need, book a convenient appointment and discuss appropriate costs.

If you telephone before 10am we will endeavour to visit you that day.

You will be asked at this stage what aftercare you wish for your pet. You may bury your pet in the garden or have your pet cremated. If you choose cremation you will have to decide whether you want the ashes back or not.

  • When we visit

Paul will introduce himself and meet your pet. He will discuss the procedure and the aftercare treatment you require and ask you to sign a consent form.

Paul will administer a sedative / anaesthetic by an injection in the muscle of a back leg and over the next 10-15 minutes your pet will become unaware of the surroundings. Once your pet is in a heavy sedated / anaesthetised state the final injection will be given to complete the euthanasia. At this stage your pet will know nothing of this and feel nothing.

Throughout these stages some owners and family members wish to stay, some wish to leave. This is your choice. Your pet is a family member and both you and they will be afforded respect and compassion.

  • When we leave

Many people feel a sense of unreality. This is normal as your mind tries to process what has happened. Some people feel a sense of relief and this is normal. This has been a difficult time for you but your pet is now at peace and you do not have to worry anymore. Relief is a natural response.

Your decision was made with kindness and compassion and you had your pet’s best interest at heart so be kind to yourself, a cup of tea or a glass of wine work well. If you are able to have something sweet this also helps. If you are on your own seek a close friend or family member and remember feeling upset or crying is normal.

Gus

Rescued when a lost stray

Dearly loved by us for many years

Put to sleep peacefully at home in his own bed

Still very much missed.
